Listen to this article

Once upon a time, in a shimmering kingdom beneath the waves, lived a young mermaid named Ariel. Her tail glowed like pearls, and her voice carried melodies that made even the grumpiest sea creatures smile. But Ariel’s greatest treasure was her curiosity. While her sisters played among coral gardens, she swam to the surface, dreaming of the world above—where sunlight danced on waves and humans walked on legs.

One stormy night, Ariel heard a loud crash. A grand ship battled the roaring sea. Through the rain, she spotted a young prince, his dark hair plastered to his face as he struggled to stay afloat. Without hesitation, Ariel dove into the churning water. She fought the currents, her tail slicing through foam, until she reached him. With all her strength, she pulled the prince to shore, hiding behind rocks as he coughed awake. A kind-eyed girl from a nearby village found him, and Ariel slipped back into the sea, her heart pounding.

“Why save a human?” her crab friend Sebastian scolded later. “They’re dangerous!” But Ariel couldn’t forget the prince’s warm smile as he’d murmured thanks to the wind. She swam to the ancient sea witch’s cave, where glowing jellyfish lit the shadows. The witch, with a voice like crackling seaweed, offered a deal: legs in exchange for her voice. “But tread carefully, little one,” she warned. “If the prince doesn’t love you truly by sunset on the third day, you’ll vanish into sea foam.”

Ariel agreed. The next morning, she awoke on a sandy beach, her tail replaced by slender legs. Every step felt like walking on knives, but she laughed as seagulls swooped overhead. Soon, the prince found her. “You look familiar,” he said, offering his hand. Though mute, Ariel charmed him with her bright eyes and playful spirit. They explored the castle gardens, fed swans, and danced under moonlight.

On the third day, the prince took her sailing. “I must marry the girl who saved me,” he sighed. Ariel’s heart sank—he still believed the village girl had rescued him. As the sun dipped low, she trembled. But just then, a wave rocked the boat, and Ariel spotted her sisters rising from the water. They tossed a glowing seashell at her feet—a gift from their father, the sea king. Inside was Ariel’s voice, reclaimed from the witch.

“It was you!” the prince gasped, recognizing her song. Ariel smiled, tears in her eyes. The spell broke, but instead of foam, she transformed back into a mermaid—her father’s final gift for her bravery. The prince, though saddened, promised to protect the ocean forever.

Ariel returned home, her heart full. She still visited the surface, sharing stories of both worlds. And though she never became human, she discovered something greater: courage to follow her heart, and kindness to bridge worlds apart.

The end.

Sweet dreams, little adventurer. May your heart always be as brave as Ariel’s.
